Bare tree in a circle on the wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bare, leafless tree with a full trunk and spreading branches sits inside an open black ring that tapers at the edges. Fine ink specks scatter beneath the tree and around the base of the circle. The tattoo is done in solid black ink with bold outer linework and finer detail in the branches, and it sits on the inner wrist against a dark sofa and grey bedding.

Dear Tom,

The ash on the rise above the heap has finally lost the last of its leaves, and your grandad would have had something to say about that. He planted it the spring you were born, in a bucket of muck he carried up from the allotment, and it has stood through three winters of soot and one of strikes without once looking like it wanted to give up. Now it's just branches, black against the sky, and when the wind comes off the heap it drops a fine grit onto the wall that Mrs Halliday swears is coal and I swear is only slag blowing off the old tips.
Mum says you're eating properly down there. I don't believe a word of it, but I'm glad you're trying. The wheel at the top of the shaft has been still since they shut the cage in March, and some nights I sit at the back window and look at the ring of it against the streetlamps and think it looks like a hoop someone forgot to pick up. Your grandad used to say a pit wheel turned for anybody who had a shift to get to. It doesn't turn now.
Come home at Christmas if the trains run. Bring the sketchbook you were always scribbling in and sit under the tree with me. I'll make the tea strong enough to stand a spoon in, and we can count the crows that come down to the bare branches. There'll be a dozen at least, and I'll tell you which one is the old tom who sits on the wall.
Love, Nan
