Roman numerals and filigree circle on forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo on the outer forearm combines a band of Roman numerals wrapping around the arm with a circular emblem. The circle has a horizontal bar with a dot at its centre and is framed by scrolling, filigree-style curls. The design is rendered in solid black linework on a warm skin tone, photographed against a pale cream fabric.

Nobody in Stannard's Yard could agree on when the clock had last been wound. Mrs Oddie swore it was the Tuesday before the flood, though the flood had come in March and it was now October. Ada Lunt, who swept the workshop floor in exchange for her bed above the cellar, said it had stopped the night old Mr Fenwick dropped his spectacles into the oil bath and laughed until he coughed.

The clock was a plain thing, a brass drum with one hand and a bar across the face where a second hand ought to be. Ada had asked about the dot at its centre, and Fenwick had told her it was the pin, the one part the whole mechanism turned around. "Everything turns about a point that does not move," he'd said, "and most people never find theirs."

Ada took the bench on the Monday. She wound the spring a quarter turn at a time, counting under her breath the old way, and when the escapement caught with a sound like a dropped coin she sat very still. The hand moved. Outside, the bells of St Aldric's started, late as usual, and she found she had counted every one of them.

On the back plate she found a scratched line in Fenwick's cramped hand: Set it to the true hour, not the church's. She went to the window and looked at the gasworks chimney and the ferry crossing the grey water, trying to work out which hour that might be. Then she moved the hands, very gently, and the room filled with a small, certain tick.
