Reddish-brown mandala and dotted line design on the outer thigh of a tanned leg, in a geometric style, with a beach behind.

Mandala design on a thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A bare leg rests on a patterned mat with the sea and sand behind. A large mandala with petal and circle motifs, dotted arcs and small crescent shapes covers the outer thigh, drawn in fine reddish-brown lines and dots. The design looks like henna or another temporary body art rather than a permanent tattoo, and the composition is centred on the thigh with the leg cropped at the top and right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tide was already sliding over the flats when Nell finished the last petal, and her grandmother said nothing about the crooked dot at its heart. Mrs Okonedo had drawn mandalas on Saltmarsh Strand every low spring tide for forty years, and in all that time not one had outlasted the second high water. She pressed the back of a cockle shell into the sand beside the crescent moons and told Nell the sea read a drawing from its edges inwards, so the outer ring always went first.

Nell had learned the work the way other children learned to swim, by being dropped in before she was ready. You used a length of bleached driftwood for the dotted arcs, because a finger smudged and a stick held its pressure. The petals came next, eight of them, then sixteen, each one a little less certain than the last. Tourists from the new holiday lets wandered down with their phones held high, photographed the design, and walked away without once asking who had made it or how long it would last.

The council had sold the strand in March. Mrs Okonedo had signed the papers with a biro that skipped, then announced that the last mandala would be drawn on the lowest tide of the year, when the water would not come back until well after dark. There would be nothing left to photograph by morning, she said, and that was the point of it.

At dusk Nell stood on the wet ring of the finished pattern and watched the sea feel its way in. The petals went first, then the arcs, then the crescents, each one softening into the flat until the whole design was only a faint darkening of the sand. Out in the shallows, where the water had not yet reached, a single pale pebble of quartz sat exactly where Nell had set it at the centre. The sea took everything else that night, but it left the one thing it could not carry away.
