White mandala designs on hand and knee

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two white ink mandala designs sit on the back of a hand and on a bare knee, each built from radiating petals, dotted borders and fine linework. The lines are thin and even, and the motifs are set against warm, tanned skin with a soft-focus brick wall behind. Teal nail polish and silver rings are also visible but are not part of the designs.

The punch had gone soft at the tip after three hundred lanterns, so Marit filed it on the step and tried again. Her uncle Ilyas did not look up from the tin. He was working a ring of dots around a petal, each dot struck with the same flat tap and the same held breath between them. 'Too close,' he said. 'The light needs room to get through.'

Every lantern they made for the Kessan road was pierced the same way: a centre rosette, then petals spreading outward, then a border of dots like frost on a window. At dusk the carters lit them and hung them on the pass posts, and the light fell out through the holes in white starbursts across the snow, so that a man on the switchbacks could tell where the road bent before he could see the road itself. Marit had counted the posts from the valley floor. Forty-one. Her uncle said the number had not changed since his grandfather's time, though the posts had been replaced twice.

The first snow came early that year, four days before the feast. Ilyas coughed through the night, and by morning he could not lift the mallet. Marit finished the forty-second lantern alone, sitting on the cold step with the tin across her knees, and when the last petal came out even she sat back and let her shoulders drop.

The lanterns went up that night with the wind pushing at the flames. Halfway along the bend below the cairn, a mule-driver lost the path in the blowing snow and stopped dead. Then a white rosette opened on the drift at his feet, where his next step would have carried him over the edge, and he stepped around it and walked on toward the lamp that had been lit for him.
