Gold metallic temporary tattoos on feet and arms
Ankle · Colour · Photo
Bare feet rest on sand with gold metallic temporary tattoos. The largest design on the top of one foot and the ankle shows an ornate mandala and dreamcatcher motif, with fine outlined linework and filled shapes. Gold and silver foil bands sit on the forearm and wrist, and a straw hat and aviator sunglasses sit in the background.

Mags had been selling gold transfers from a biscuit tin since the rides shut for the season, and by the third week of September the sheets had curled in the damp. She laid them out on an upturned crate at the end of the pier, weighted with shells so the wind off the sea would not take them. The mandala sheet was the one the girls asked for, a dreamcatcher spun in fine gold lines with a feather hanging from its lowest loop.

Dev, who ran the dodgems and had nothing to do between queues, came over with two teas in paper cups. "Nobody buys that one any more," he said. "They want hearts." Mags said hearts wash off in a week and a dreamcatcher stays on until you scrub it, which was not quite true, but she liked the way it sounded. She pressed a sheet onto the back of her own hand, dampened the paper with a sponge, and peeled it away. The gold stayed, bright as a coin in the low sun.
A girl in a borrowed straw hat stopped at the crate, sunglasses pushed up into her hair, and asked for the one with the shell. There was only one left, a small silver scallop with a cluster of bands that Mags had been keeping back for herself. She handed it over without a word. The girl tore the backing with her teeth, pressed it to the inside of her wrist, and grinned at the sea as if it had owed her something.
When the tide turned and the lights came on along the front, Mags found the empty tin on the crate and, tucked beneath it, a single dreamcatcher sheet with one corner folded down. Dev swore it wasn't him. She pressed it onto her ankle anyway and walked home barefoot along the sand, the gold catching the lamps one step at a time.
