Mandala designs with Rebel and Empire emblems
Geometric · Mixed · Flash
Two radially symmetrical mandala designs sit side by side on a grey, textured background. The left design is red and features a white and red circular emblem with a bird-like shape at its centre, while the right design is blue and features a white and blue circular emblem with radiating spokes. Both use fine hatched linework, layered petal shapes and stepped border patterns.

The canvas for the banners was already stretched across two sawhorses when Nell got back from Kettering, and Dennis Abbott was standing over it with a tin of red gouache and the face of a man who had been arguing with a generator all afternoon. His cousin Ray wanted the bird in the circle, the old rebel sign, painted on the front of the hook-a-duck stall. Ray's rival on the far side of the green wanted the blue one with its white spokes for the shooting gallery. Neither of them would say the other's name out loud.

Nell didn't paint the emblems. She drew a ring of petals around each one instead, long pointed leaves with hatching fine as lace, the kind her gran used to crochet onto cuffs, and a stepped border she could repeat without thinking. "Same bones," she told them, "different sides." Dennis grumbled that it looked like a doily. Ray said nothing, but he came back every evening to check the count.
They worked by a paraffin lamp for four nights while the moths gathered and the Waltzer ticked over in the dark. Nell counted twelve petals on each side, then twelve again, and rubbed out one stray line with her thumb. On the last night she hung both banners from the same rope at the crossroads where the two stalls faced each other across the mud.
Ray came first, then Dennis, both with their hands in their pockets. They stood in front of their own colour and said nothing for a long time. Then Dennis noticed the petals met exactly at the tips, and Ray noticed the borders matched, and somebody passed a bottle of cider down the line. A single moth had settled in the wet red at the centre of the emblem. Nobody wiped it off.
