Six geometric line designs on black
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows six white geometric designs arranged in a grid on a black textured background. The designs include a pentagon with circles, nested diamonds, an inverted triangle inside a double circle, layered triangles, a ring of interlocking circles, and a circle of tick marks around overlapping rings. The linework is fine and uniform, with solid white fills and dotted or dashed accents, and the composition is balanced and symmetrical.

By the last week of August the windfalls have started to sort themselves, and you are the only one still bothering to notice. Your grandfather planted the Hollow Field in fives, a pentagon of Bramleys with a single Discovery at each corner, and he swore the wind never knocked a fruit out of true. You walk it with a notebook and a pencil stub, counting drops inside the dashed ring where the old well capping sits, and the number never matches what you expect.

Forty-one on Tuesday. Thirty-eight on Wednesday. Your cousin Dale says the badgers are at them, and you let him have that. Around the outer wall, where the cider men used to park their trailers, the wasps gather in a slow gold ring over the grass. You kneel at the nearest tree and turn an apple over in your palm, bruised on one side and sweet at the core, and you find yourself drawing its shape as three nested triangles, because that is how the light sits on the stubble in the afternoon.
The pattern in the notebook is nothing like the orchard. Your grandfather never wrote it down. You find it only in the margin of his almanac, a pencil ring of circles around a single eye, and beneath it, in his square hand: Leave one for whoever comes next.
So on the last evening you do not pick the centre tree. You walk the five corners, count the drops one final time, and leave the single ripe Discovery hanging where the lines meet, its skin gone rosy and the low sun slanting through it onto the grass.
