Mandala flower design drawings on paper
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
Several mandala designs are drawn on paper and sketchbook pages. The foreground piece has a central lotus-style flower with layered petals, surrounded by looping fine-line scrollwork and compass-style N and S markings. Shading is built from stippled dots and fine hatching in black ink on white paper, with the drawings arranged across the frame.

Dear Marguerite, the compass on the drawing you asked me to keep is still on my desk at the depot, weighted under a cracked mug so the draught from the loading bay doesn't lift it. I finished the last of the petals at four this morning, while the buses were still idling outside the garage on Corporation Street and the rain had made the whole city smell of wet pennies. You'll laugh, but I counted the dots twice. Three hundred and eleven in the outer ring alone, each one pressed in with the nib you lent me, because you said a line is a lie told quickly and a dot is an honest hour.

The north and south letters I left plain. The scrollwork that loops between them I drew without lifting the pen, so that the ink never breaks, and where the loops cross they make small knots like the ones Dad used to tie in the trawler's mooring rope. I know you think the lotus at the centre is too much, all those layered petals folding in on themselves. But I kept thinking of the night the lights went out on the Hollins Road bridge and everyone stood still at the rail, waiting for the petals of the city to open again one lamp at a time.
The sketchbook pages are in a box under the bed now. When the rain stops I'll post the foreground one to you with the N turned towards your window, so you know which way is home. Write back and tell me whether the south point is pointing at the sea yet. I've checked it three times and I can't tell.
