Black ink mandala design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical mandala drawn in black ink on white paper, built from a central flower surrounded by layered petals, teardrop shapes and scrolling motifs. The linework is fine and detailed, with areas of stippled dots adding texture and shading. The design fills a near-square composition with even spacing and no visible background beyond the paper.

Aunt Ivy never drew anything straight. She sat at the kitchen table at the edge of Hollin Wood with a steel nib and a bottle of Indian ink, and she always started in the middle, with one small flower she called the hinge. Everything else grew outward from it. My mother said it was a waste of good paper. Ivy said paper was only waiting to be told what it was.

When I was twelve she taught me the dots. You place them first, she said, in rings, and the rings tell you where the petals go. Count them out loud and you will never lose your place. We counted through that long summer while the bracken browned along the wood's edge and the church bell rang for funerals I did not yet understand. For every family that left the village she drew a ring of dots with a teardrop for each name, and she never once told me which ones were which.
The winter she died, I found the last sheet pinned under the teapot. It was the same mandala, but the outer ring was broken. Three petals were missing on the north side, and in their place were blank gaps exactly the width of the path that runs from the stile to the old charcoal burners' hut, the one the search party walked twice before the snow came. Ivy had left the dots there in pencil, faint as breath, and beside them a single word I could not read until I tilted the paper to the window. It said wait.
I took the pen from the jar and began to count, starting from the hinge, the way she taught me, so I would not lose my place.
