Henna-style floral and paisley design sheet
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The image is a sheet of several separate motifs drawn in fine brown outline on a pale beige background. The main elements are large layered flower heads, curling paisley shapes, small blossoms and leaves, each filled with dotted and hatched detail. The linework is even and uniform in tone, with no shading, and the motifs are spaced apart across the sheet.

Gwen had been on the ward at St Aidan's for eleven hours when the agency nurse, Priya, slid a folded sheet across the drug trolley. "Pattern book from my aunt in Leicester," she said. "Don't lose it, she counts them." The sheet was a photocopy, its brown ink gone soft at the edges, with flowers the size of saucers and paisleys curling like fiddleheads. Gwen traced one onto the back of a fluid balance chart while the monitor in bed nine chirped about a falling saturation. She learned the petals by counting: five rings, then a dot in each gap.

Between obs she worked the scroll at the bottom of the page, the one that ends in a bud, and she didn't stop when the call bell went for bed twelve. Her hand got steadier as the corridor lights dimmed to their night setting. At four, Mr Okafor in bay two asked what she was drawing. She told him about the sheet, and he said his mother had painted her hands with henna for weddings in Lagos, the paste cold at first and then warm as it dried. "Draw me one," he said. She did a small blossom on the back of his wrist with the cap of a biro, and he held it up to the lamp like a passport photograph.
At seven the day staff came in loud with coffee. Gwen folded the sheet back into its envelope, the creases already soft, and put it in her locker beside the spare pens. Priya would want it back in one piece. The leaf on the second page was still missing a vein, and Gwen had decided to fix it on Thursday, on her night off, at her kitchen table, where nobody would ask her to check a pulse.
