Mandala flower tattoo on the hand
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical mandala-style flower with layered petals and a central dot is tattooed on the hand, which is held towards the camera. The bold, even linework is filled with simple grey shading in the petals and centre. The dim, moody lighting, knitted sleeve and leather bracelet frame the hand against a shadowy background.

Dear Tom, the lock at Hatton took more paint off the Wren's port side, so she looks like a tired hen this week, but I have been busy with the flowers. Mrs Okafor at the top lock gave me three bulbs of a red she called hot ember, and I have planted them in the old coal scuttle since the tubs went to nettles without you.

Every night after the lamp is turned low I sit at the table with Dad's brass dividers and draw the same thing on the back of the chart: a ring, then a ring of petals inside it, then petals again, then a small dot in the very middle where the point stays. He taught me on the roses and castles panel he painted for the cabin door, the one with the chipped corner you always blamed on the cat. Six petals, then twelve, then the whole thing turning on itself until it sits still on the paper like water in a pound.
Last Tuesday the drawing came out wrong. The outer petals ran off the edge of the chart and I had to start again on a clean sheet, and when I looked up the lock had filled and the gates were groaning open for us, slow as a hymn. I held the dividers over the dot and thought of you out past the estuary on that tanker, and I pressed my thumb down where the point had been and left a smudge there.
The bulbs are shooting now, two green spears by the back doors. Come up the cut when the flowers are out, and bring my dividers back, the ones you borrowed in March and swore were in your kitbag. I will keep the kettle on and the dot in the middle clean.
Love, Nell
