Mandala forearm tattoo with all-seeing eye

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical mandala covers the forearm, with an all-seeing eye inside a triangle at the centre and a second circular motif below it. The design is built from dots, fine lines and stippled shading, with ornamental scalloped borders and feathered fringe at the lower edge. Only black and grey ink is used, shown against a dark background with the hand raised.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The eye had been painted over the door of the mill house for as long as anyone in Harrowdale could remember, and it was the miller's wife who first noticed it had started to watch the road instead of the yard. She said nothing to her husband. She put the bread in the oven and kept an eye on the eye, as the saying went, though nobody in the valley ever said it with a straight face.

The travelling tinker came in October with a bag of brass tacks and a cough. He asked for a bed and was given the loft above the cart shed. In the morning the eye above the door was turned toward him, and he laughed and said the mill had a fine sense of who was coming. He stayed a week, mending pans and mending the miller's ledger, and he drew patterns on the back of every bill he was given, rings inside rings, scalloped like lace, feathered at the bottom like ferns under water.

On the last day the miller's wife found a sheet of his drawings pinned inside the cart shed. At the centre of the largest ring was an eye in a triangle, the same as the one over the door, and beneath it another circle, and beneath that a fringe of fronds reaching for the ground. She folded the sheet and put it in the oven drawer, where she kept the things that mattered. When the tinker's cart had gone over the hill, the eye above the mill door had turned back to face the yard, and it stayed that way, looking at nothing in particular, for the rest of her life.
