Mandala rosette on the back of a hand
Traditional · Hand · Colour · Photo
A round mandala-style flower sits centrally on the back of a hand, with orange petals, a black centre ring and black dots around a red octagonal border. Three dark green leaves extend upward toward the wrist, and a few smaller leaves appear at the lower edge. Bold black outlines and flat, solid colour fills dominate, with soft red shading across the knuckles.

The seal on the bloom-bay hatch had cracked again, and Ines was the only one awake to hear it hiss. She pressed her palm flat to the red housing of the wayfinding dial and felt the cold come through the metal, the same cold that had crept along the corridors of the Marigold Reach for three hundred and eleven days.

The dial had been built before anyone aboard was born, a rosette of eight orange petals ringed by black dots, each dot a waypoint the founders had charted by hand. At its heart sat the hub, a dark ring where the first navigator had fixed the star-clock. Green shoots from the grow-racks pushed against the glass at its lower edge, as if the ship's gardens wanted a say in where it was going.
Captain Dace wanted the housing sealed and the needle swapped for a printed strip from stores. Ines went instead to the archive cupboard and found the original plan pinned behind a sheet of yellowed film. The petals were not decoration. Each one counted a generation, and the needle had been bent years ago by an engineer who wanted the arrival date to look kinder. For forty years the ship had been steering toward a sun that was not there.
She took the hub key from her belt, loosened the ring one turn, and drew the needle back to true. Down in the bloom-bay the lamps came up one petal at a time, orange, then orange again, until the whole rosette glowed through the cracked glass and the leaves beneath it stood very still, all pointing the same way.
