Mandala tattoo between the shoulder blades

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey mandala tattoo sits centrally on the upper back, built from concentric rings of petal shapes with fine dotted detail. The photograph is taken from behind, with the subject's dreadlocks gathered on top of their head and a blurred interior behind them. The tattoo is sharply contrasted against the pale skin, and the composition centres it in the lower half of the frame.

The lens came off the bench in March with a hairline crack running from its rim toward the centre, and Edith Varley would not let the boy take it down to the scrap merchant. She sat with it on a folded blanket under the window for three evenings, turning it slowly against the grey light, until she had traced every line of the crack and found that it followed the petals her father had cut into the glass forty years before.

Her father had been a grinder at the point, and he had never trusted a plain lens. Each ring of petals was set inside the one before, and between them he had pricked tiny dots with a diamond point, thousands of them, so the light would catch in small bright stops as the lamp turned. The fishing fleet called it the rose. The men said you could steer by it in fog if you knew which petal was yours, and most of them did, because she had taught them as children on the quay.

She mended the crack with copper strip and a grain of resin, one petal at a time, counting the dots aloud so her hands would keep to a rhythm. It took the whole of April. When she was done the seam was almost invisible, a fine dark thread through the silver, and she had to admit the glass was stronger than it had been before.

On the first night of the May season the lamp was lit and the rose began to turn. The beam went out through the mended glass and broke into a hundred narrow spokes across the water, each one landing exactly where a boat would need it, and far out in the murk the first engine answered with a single short cough.
