Seated winged figure with braid on mid back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A sepia-toned photograph of a person's bare back, with dark hair falling over the left shoulder. A tattoo of a small figure sits low on the upper back, showing a head bowed forward, a long braid down the spine, and wing-like shapes folded around the body. The figure is rendered in soft grey shading with fine, pencil-like hatching, and the composition centres the tattoo against plain skin.

Ada had the lamp trimmed by four, the way her father had taught her before the fever took him, and by five the wind had backed round to the north-east and was worrying at the glass. She climbed the iron stair with the oil can under one arm and the wick scissors tucked into her apron, and stopped on the landing where the figurehead from the Marguerite Lowe lay wrapped in sailcloth against the wall.

It was a woman with wings folded tight against her back and her head bowed over her knees, a long plait running down her spine like a rope someone had forgotten to coil. The fishermen called her the Mourner. The salvage men had dragged her out of the surf at Scarrow Hole in March, and the harbour clerk had written that she could stay until someone claimed her. Nobody had. Ada took to sitting with her on the landing while the kettle went cold, telling her the names of the boats that passed.

That night the squall came in hard, the lamp dropped twice, and on the second time Ada heard a horn far out, thin and wrong. She got the wick trimmed and the mirrors turning and the beam swinging out over the black water. When she went down for spare paraffin she found the sailcloth pulled loose and the carved woman sitting upright, her plait drawn across the step as if someone had been combing it through their fingers.

Ada left her there. She climbed back up, let the beam go round once more, and on the next sweep saw a dinghy riding the back of a wave with a lantern rising and falling in its bow. She leaned out of the gallery and shouted into the wind until the lantern turned toward her. "Keep the light on me," she called, and kept it there. By morning the fisherman's boy was asleep in the cottage, and the figure on the landing still had her head bowed, though her wings had come a little further open than the sailcloth remembered.
