Mandala tattoo on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a forearm with a circular mandala tattoo centred on the arm. The design has a radial pattern of petals, scalloped rings and small teardrop motifs, drawn in fine black lines with some solid areas of shading. The sleeve of a grey t-shirt and a dark background frame the arm, and the photo is softly lit.

Ada kept the night ward at Saint Brannoc's the winter the lift broke. Each hour she walked the corridor and counted the doors, eleven of them, and at the far end the lamp over the sluice room laid a pale ring on the linoleum that she was not supposed to step inside. The porters said it was bad luck to cross it. Ada had never believed in luck, but she always walked round it.

Mr Pell in bed six could not sleep that night, so she brought him the back of a drug chart and a pencil. He drew a circle, then petals inside it, then a smaller circle in the middle, working slowly with his tongue between his teeth. He said his mother had scratched the same pattern into the flagstones of the mill at Tarvin, so the children would know where the centre was when the river came up over the yard. Ada asked him why anyone would need the centre. He said you always need to know where you are standing before the water arrives.
She kept the drawing folded in her pocket for the rest of the shift. When her feet ached she traced one petal with her thumb and counted it, then the next, and by four o'clock she had counted to forty and the corridor had stopped echoing back at her.
At six the day sister found bed six stripped and the sheets folded square. On the top of the pillow lay a fresh sheet of chart paper, and on it someone had drawn the same circle, petals and all, with a tiny lamp in the middle. Ada took the paper home in her coat. On the way out she stepped, for the first time, into the pale ring on the floor, and found it was warm.
