Sunflower and peony shoulder tattoo
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large floral tattoo covers the shoulder and upper arm of a person photographed from the side, with the face not shown. The design centres on a sunflower with a peony and smaller daisy-like blooms, drawn in fine black outlines with light internal detail and little solid shading. The black and white photograph is softly lit against a pale, blurred background, with a floral-print top visible below the tattoo.

The sunflower in Mab Hollis's back garden had been planted the spring her husband went down the pit, and by August it stood taller than the privy roof. Everyone in Coldharbour Lane agreed it was the best sunflower in the parish. It turned its great face to the sun from first light until dusk, and the children said it could tell the time better than the church clock.

Her son Tobias sailed the year the peonies came up red. He went out of Harwich on a collier with a tin trunk and a promise to write, and the letters came in the autumn, then the winter, then not at all. Mab kept the peonies in the ground, though they never flowered properly without a hard frost. She pressed the little white daisies between the pages of the almanac so she would have something to count.
In the third summer a carter brought word that a collier had gone down off the Dogger Bank with all hands. Mab did not go to the quay. She walked out in her apron to the sunflower and found that it had bent in the night, its head hung low and turned away from the road, facing east where the sea was. She sat on an upturned bucket beside it until the light went.
Next morning she cut the head off and dried the seeds on the kitchen table. The following spring she sowed them along the garden wall, and by midsummer a hedge of gold stood there, bending every evening towards the water as if someone had asked it to keep watch.
