Mandala flower with dotted line on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black mandala-style flower sits on the forearm, with a central daisy-like bloom surrounded by a ring of pointed petals and small dots. A fine dotted line trails from the design down the arm, and a loop of linework rises at the top left. The shading is built from stippled dots in black and grey, and a matching stencil sits out of focus on the table behind the arm.

Before the bells of the lower town, Mirela rose in the dark and lit the oven with split ash. Her mother had told her that a loaf without a mark would be eaten by the wrong people, so each morning she pressed a round wooden stamp into the dough. It carved a flower with a ring of pointed petals, and into every petal she pushed a single poppy seed with her thumb.

One winter the flour ran low and the frost came early. A stranger knocked at the back door before the sky had turned, a thin man whose lamp cast no shadow on the step. He asked for bread for a road that was not yet built. She gave him the heel of the morning batch. He thanked her and walked out across the yard, and wherever his boots touched the frost, small black dots opened in the white. They ran off between the cabbage rows and up the hill toward the pines.
Mirela did not follow. She pressed the stamp again, and again, until the wooden tray held nothing but flowers. By morning the dotted line had reached the village well and stopped there, and the women who drew water said the stones were warm beneath it. Nobody saw the thin man again.
She keeps the stamp on a nail by the door now. Each dawn she counts the seeds on the first loaf before she lifts it from the oven, and each dawn there is one more than she pressed.
