Dotwork mandala lace tattoo on an ankle
Dotwork · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a symmetrical mandala-style design of scalloped lace borders, petal shapes and floral rosettes, with radiating lines through the central panels. It is built from fine stippled dots and solid outlines, with soft dotted shading fading outward at the edges. The image is in black and grey on bare skin, with the design cropped at the top and right and the dark background filling the surrounding frame.

Dear Margit, I have finally finished the second christening shawl for the Pell girl, and I am writing to tell you that your pattern was right after all, even though you laughed at me for counting the rosettes twice. The scallops go round the hem exactly as you showed me, nine of them to a side, and the petals open outward from the centre like a dandelion clock that has decided to be sensible. Mrs Haddow came by on Thursday with a spool of Egyptian cotton she swore was the last of its kind in Halifax, and I told her I had no need of it, which was a lie, because I have been stitching the same rosette in my sleep since Michaelmas.

I went up to the reunion hall in the end, though you know how I feel about those evenings. They had the old chairs out and the urn going, and someone had pinned the 1961 class photograph to the board by the door. Nobody mentioned the spring of the bazaar, which suited me. Dorothy Lund asked after you and I said you were in Leeds minding your grandson, which is what you told me to say, and she looked at my hands and said she supposed I still did the fine work. I said I did, and that the fine work was the only thing I had ever been quite certain of.
I am enclosing a small square of the border, the one where the dots fade off into nothing, so you can see how I finally managed the shading. It took three nights and a great deal of swearing. Do write back and tell me it is as good as it looks to me, and do not say it is clever. Clever is what they say about things that will not last. Your friend, Vera.
