Mandala armband tattoo on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A wide band of ornamental mandala patterns wraps around the forearm, with a scalloped border and a solid black line along the top edge. The motifs use fine linework and dense stippled dotwork shading, and dotted chains with teardrop pendants hang from the lower edge. The tattoo is entirely black and grey against the skin, set on a dark background with a softly blurred shelf behind.

Dear Ada,

The frame in the top room has been running since Monday and Mr Pell still won't let us oil it, so my fingers are raw from threading bobbins by candle. You asked in your last letter whether the Heathcote order got out on time. It did, all forty yards of the wide band with the scalloped edge that the buyer wanted for a hat trimming before he changed his mind. I stitched the black cord along the top myself so the wrong side wouldn't show.

Between the scallops I worked the rosettes the way Mother taught us, a little eye at the centre and petals going out like the hands of a clock. Where the net ran thin I dotted it in with the finest pin, one hole after another, until the window light made each dot look like a bead of rain. Then the pendants. Tear-shaped drops hung from a chain of seed pearls, and I pinned every one by hand so none of them would knock against its neighbour when the cloth was folded.

Mr Pell came up at six and held the finished length to the lamp. He turned it over twice and said nothing, which from him is praise. He cut it free, rolled it in tissue, and I watched the drops swing as he carried it down the stairs, the way a hem moves when someone walks away from you and doesn't look back.
