Lotus flower tattoo on the back
Traditional · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A lotus flower is shown in full bloom, with layered pointed petals drawn in bold black outline. The petals use solid black fills, grey shading, and fine stippled dotwork texture, with small dots set along the upper petals. The flower is centred in the frame on smooth skin, with a faint rosy tone in the middle petals.

The ice on the water trough had to be broken with the back of the hatchet every morning in January, and you did it before the ewes were fed, the way your father had shown you before his hands got too stiff to hold the handle. The wind came straight across the top field from the reservoir and got into the cowshed through every gap in the boards. Nothing grew. That was the trouble with winter here: you measured it in what did not come up.

Your grandmother's kitchen window faced north, and that was where the frost worked hardest. Each morning it laid down petals on the glass, layered and pointed, with little beads where the condensation had frozen mid-drip. You scraped a clear patch with your thumbnail, the way she had, and looked out at the yard through the middle of a flower that would be gone before the kettle boiled.
In the drawer under the mangle sat an envelope from a seed merchant in Boston, Lincolnshire, ordered years ago and never planted. Nelumbo, the label said, in her square capitals. She had kept it because the pond at the bottom of the lane had flooded once, and she swore a lotus had come up out of the mud the summer after the war, pale and wet and entirely out of place. Nobody believed her. Everybody on the farm had an opinion about what the ground could hold.
On the last Sunday of February you took the seeds to the sink, ran them under warm water and nicked each hard coat with the penknife, as the leaflet told you. Then you set them in a jam jar on the sill above the stove. Frost kept coming at the glass every night, and you kept scraping it clear. By the third week, when the window ran wet with steam, there was a small green point in one jar, pushing up through the water as if it had been waiting all along.
