Black and grey mandala on the back of neck
Dotwork · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A large radial mandala with a central flower-like motif and layered outer petals sits on the back of a neck. The design uses bold black outlines, solid black fills and fine stippled dots that fade into the surrounding skin. The image is a close crop in black and grey tones, and only the lower neck and upper back are visible.

The oven had been lit since three, and Mabel was still cutting the tops of the rounds when the first milk cart rattled past the shutters. Her grandmother had always said you scored a cob from the middle outwards, one slash for each petal, so the loaf opened like a flower when it hit the heat. Mabel had never got the petals even. Her blade wandered every time she looked up at the window.

Old Hannah, who had baked on Pell Street for fifty years, came down the stairs in her stockinged feet and found the girl crouched over the board with a row of lopsided rounds. She picked one up, turned it in her floury hands, and said nothing for a while. Then she took the knife from Mabel and drew it once, slow, from the centre to the crust, and the cut opened clean as a drawn compass.
Why does it matter, Mabel asked, if they all taste the same by noon? Hannah wiped the blade on her apron. The carters buy the bread, she said, but the dark is what they feel at the door. A round loaf with its petals cut true is a thing you can trust before the sun is up. Go on, she said, and put the knife back in Mabel's hand. Start in the middle.
Mabel started in the middle. By the time the bells of St Agnes rang six, the tray held twelve loaves, each one a small bloom with its petals open, and the first lamp was lit across the road. Hannah counted them with one finger and did not say they were good, which from her was the same thing.
