Mandala tattoo on the thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A large mandala design sits on the outer thigh, built from a central rosette, layered pointed petals and leaf shapes. The outlines are fine and crisp, and stippled dots shade the outer edges and gaps between the petals. The ink is a single blue tone against pale skin, and the design is set against a wooden floor and pale blue wall.

The rosette was the first thing to crack, though nobody said so until the spring gales had passed. I found the hairline running out from its centre on a Tuesday, when the light was still turning and the glass was throwing its petals across the gallery floor like someone had scattered a cut-out flower over the boards.

Mrs Penhallow from the mainland office came out on the supply boat with a notebook and a tin of lens grease. She knelt beside me on the wet step and traced the outer petals with one finger, counting the rings under her breath. Eleven leaves, she said, then twelve, then eleven again. She was certain the pattern had been drawn by someone who understood geometry better than the sea ever would.
We spent a week with a loupe and a feather brush, lifting salt and grit from every crevice where the prisms met the brass. Each speck we cleared felt like a small argument won. By the Friday the petals were sharp again, and the beam fell out over the water in clean, layered spokes that the fishing boats could read from ten miles off.
On her last night she climbed the stairs with me one more time, and we watched the light go round. The flower swept across the cloud base and came back, swept and came back. 'You mend a thing,' she said, 'and it still turns the same way.' I wrote that in the log beneath the weather, and then, because the book has no column for such things, I wrote it again in the margin.
