Black and grey roses on an upper thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of roses, buds and leaves covers the outer upper thigh, with a larger open rose at the centre and a smaller bloom with foliage beneath it. The linework is fine and the petals are softly shaded in grey and black, giving the flowers depth against the pale skin. The image is in black and grey only, and the cropped composition shows a hand and wrist resting near the tattoo against a dark garment.

Sit down, sit down, you'll want the good chair for this one, because the story's long and my knees are not what they were. Harcourt House had eleven floors of grey concrete and not one living thing on any of them, unless you counted the pigeons, and the pigeons did not count, not in my book.

Then Mrs Ada Brennan on the ninth floor carried up a bucket of soil from the car park flowerbed, and a rose cutting wrapped in a damp tea towel, and she set it on her balcony rail where the wind could get at it. The men from the housing office came up the stairs twice that summer to tell her it was a hazard. She told them the rose had been a hazard in Lewisham for forty years and nobody had complained then.
By August the stem had found the railing and climbed it, leaves like little green hands, and the first bud came out the colour of a bruise going yellow at the edges. Ada would sit beneath it with her tea and draw it in a school exercise book with a stub of pencil, rubbing the petals with her thumb until they looked as if they'd been left out in the rain.
When the demolition notice went up that autumn, the rose was still there, pushing through the bars toward the light. The crane men came in October. They stopped at the ninth floor, looked up at the bloom, and one of them took off his hard hat. They left that balcony standing, and nobody has ever been able to say why, though I have my own ideas, and they all start with Ada and her thumb.
