Dotwork mandala on the thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical mandala with a central star, layered petals and scalloped outer rings sits on the outer thigh. The outlines are bold and solid, with fine stippled dotwork shading in the petals and small solid black fills between the points. The image has two panels: a full view on the left and a close-up on the right, against a grey tiled background.

Dear Aunt Hester, the lintel over the chapel door came down on Tuesday, not the whole of it but the corner, and Mr Pryce says the masons from Llandovery can't come before Michaelmas. So I have been up the ladder every morning with a bucket of lime and a pair of compasses, copying the rose window from the old drawings in the vestry, because the Bishop wants the wedding on the Saturday regardless and Miss Owen will not be married under a hole.

You would laugh at me. Eight points to the star, Father always said, and never seven, because seven is for the devil's dinner plates, and I have drawn it eight times now on scrap paper until my wrist aches. The petals go out in three rings. The outer scallops I did last, where the wind was coming off the river and kept lifting my sheet. The trick is to keep the dots even. Father used a nail for the stipple and said a good hand is a patient one, and I told him patience was for men who had someone to pay them by the hour.
I finished the last of the dotwork at dusk yesterday. The stone looked grey and tired in the lamplight, so I went down and fetched the blue lamp from the stores, and when I held it up to the window the whole rose caught the light like a snowflake pressed into frost. Miss Owen came round the corner with her mother and stopped dead, and then she laughed, and said it was the only thing in the parish she had ever wanted to keep.
So Saturday it will be fine, and you must come. Bring the good gloves. Your loving niece, Bethan.
