Mandala tattoo on upper back

Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large mandala with layered petals, rings of dots and a radiating star outline sits centred on the upper back. The linework is fine and the shading is built from stippled dots, giving the design a detailed, symmetrical look. The photograph is black and white, with the subject seen from behind against a plain pale wall and a strappy crop top framing the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dust had worked its way into the folds of the map by the third day, and Nell Harrow had stopped trying to brush it out. The junction at Salt Wells had five roads and one signpost, and the signpost had been shot through so often that it pointed at the sky. A woman in a tin-roofed kiosk sold her a flask of sweet tea and a folded sheet of paper with a star drawn on it.

"Every road out of here loops back in," the woman said, tapping the centre of the star with a bitten fingernail. "Count the dots on the ring nearest the middle. The ring with an odd number is yours." Nell laughed, then stopped, because the woman was not joking. The drawing was all rings of tiny dots and layered petals, eight points of light radiating out to a hard outer edge, as if someone had hammered a sun flat and then pinned it down with care.

She counted through the afternoon with the wheel loose in her hands and her lips moving, the heat lifting the road into shining lakes that never arrived. The petals kept her honest. Each one was a turn she had to make, and each turn she made in her head before the car made it for her. At the ninth ring the dots came to thirty-one, and she felt foolish and certain at once.

The road it named ran north past a dry lake, where a circle of white stones stood in the cracked clay. Inside the circle lay a child's sandal, bleached grey, and beside it a pencilled star scratched into a flat rock. Nell crouched, touched one point with her thumb, and felt the warm grit of it. Then she stood, took the pen from her pocket, and added one more dot to the paper, so the next traveller would know the road had been counted.
