Lotus mandala tattoo on upper back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind, showing a black and grey lotus mandala tattoo centred on her upper back, with a vertical line of small dots above and below the design. The lotus has layered petals with fine, intricate detailing and shading that gives it depth. The soft-focus woodland background and black and white treatment keep the focus on the tattoo.

Nobody in Harrowmere could remember who had drawn the lotus on the schoolroom floor, only that it had been there before the first bell of every term. Mrs Oddy swept it each Friday and each Monday it was back, petals laid out in pencil, with a row of small dots running up from its centre like the stones of a causeway.

When the year-nine class came back for the reunion, thirty years on, they found the hall smaller and the floor still marked. Dennis Parr stood over it with his hands in his coat pockets and said the dots were the same count as they had been at eleven. Ruth Calder said that was nonsense, but she counted them anyway, under her breath, and got to seven above and seven below.

Mrs Oddy was dead, and the caretaker's son told them the pond behind the playing field had been filled in the spring of their fourth year. Still, somebody had brought a cup of water in a jam jar and set it on the centre petal. Nobody owned to it. They passed the jar round, each of them drinking a little, the way they had once passed notes under the desks, and the water tasted of pond and pennies.

When the hall emptied, the floor was wet at the centre and the lines had gone dark, as if the chalk had been drawn in ink. Ruth stayed behind to lock up. Under the lotus, in the grain of the wood, she found one dot she had not counted, and she left it where it was.
