Black ink mandala tattoos cover the tops of both feet and the toes in a geometric dotwork style, photographed against a dark background.

Mandala tattoos covering both feet

Geometric · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet are shown from above, each covered with a symmetrical black mandala design that fans out from the ankle across the top of the foot and between the toes. The design uses fine radiating linework, concentric bands, scalloped edges and small dots, with solid dark lines throughout. The ink is black on skin, with the feet set against a dark, low-lit background and a reddish leather surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lacquer on the bench had gone soft in the heat, and Marisol pressed her thumbs into the fan of black lines on the nearer foot to see whether the ink had settled. It had. Every ray held its place, the scalloped edges sat like the rim of a bowl turned upside down, and the little dots ran in their careful row toward the toes as if someone had counted them out in the dark. Her grandmother had done the same with henna on the palms of brides in Jodhpur, saying a pattern wants to be walked on before it can be trusted.

So on the long night of the wedding walk, when the power failed and the caravan lamps guttered, Marisol unlaced her boots and set her bare feet on the cold sand of the old salt road. She let the mandala open under her soles the way it had been drawn. The lines ran out ahead of her in rings, and the dots lit one by one like the stations of a railway nobody had built. Behind her the drivers were arguing about the axle. She did not turn round. A pattern that keeps its shape on a moving road is worth a dozen maps.

By dawn the sand had blown across the centre of the design and filled the spaces between the rays. Marisol brushed the grit away with the hem of her shawl, and found the bands had held. At the far edge of the desert a single tent stood with its flap tied open, and somebody inside was already pouring tea. She laced her boots again slowly, because she knew the road now, and it had learned her feet.
