The back of a hand and the wrist are covered in a symmetrical geometric pattern made of fine black lines, triangles, dots and fanned rays. Several fingers carry bands of parallel lines, and one finger has a small cross mark. The ink is solid black, set against the skin in a dark, low-lit photograph with a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mother Anning would not let the fair leave Pennock Common until the boy had counted every peg. He crawled under the big top with a lantern in his teeth, the canvas breathing above him like something asleep, and counted by touch. Each peg had a ring of thread wound round its head, three bands, five bands, seven, one for each town where the ground had swallowed it and given it back.

The count was always short by one. Mother Anning said the missing peg had been driven at Tallow Ford sixty years back, by a man who wanted the fair to stay put and the crowds to stay with it. Every night the fair played its tune to the moon, and the moon sent its rays down across the tents, and every morning the tents stood a little further off than they had the day before.

On the last night at Pennock the boy found the peg. It was not wood but bone, cold as a bell, with a cross cut into its head. He carried it to the wagon and laid it in the ledger beside the knot marked with his own name, and the light from the lamp fanned out over the page like a hand held open.

Mother Anning took the peg from his palm and drove it into the frozen field with a single blow. The tents held. The wheel of the Ferris stopped turning. In the morning the fair was still on Pennock Common, and the boy was the one who had to stay with it, counting pegs for good.
