Mandala pattern across the back of a hand

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo covers the back of the hand and extends onto the fingers, with a central mandala of circles, scrolls and dots that radiates outwards. Bold black linework fills the design, with stripes running along the fingers and small spiral motifs between the lines. The ink is solid black on pale skin, set against a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Before the ovens were lit, Ruth stood at the steel table with a brass cutter in one hand and Mr Hale's ledger propped against the flour bin. The van from the depot had not come yet. The shop smelt of yeast and cold tiles, and through the glass she could see the bus shelter on Pollard Street lit up like a lantern with nobody waiting in it.

The ledger was all sketches, pages of them in pencil, rings inside rings, scrolls that curled in toward a single dot. Under each drawing he had written the date and a weight in grams, as though the pattern were a loaf. She had taken them for doodles until she found the one for the Sunday bun, a flower of circles with a spiral at every petal, and a note underneath: cut it once in the dough, let it prove, don't rush the middle.

So she rolled the sweet dough thin, pressed the cutter down in a ring, then another inside it, and worked the scrolls with the blunt end of a skewer while the kitchen grew warm. Currants went into the dots one at a time. Her fingers ached, and the work got slower and steadier, the way he had said it would. Somewhere behind her the radio clicked on and began the shipping forecast to nobody.

When the last spiral was brushed with egg wash, she slid the tray into the oven and wiped her palms on her apron. Outside, a driver had stopped to stare through the window at the pale rounds cooling on the rack, their centres dark with fruit like the eyes of something patient. She did not go out to tell him. The bread was not finished until it had risen, and that took as long as it took.
