Tribal back piece with central circle

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large black tribal design covers the upper back, centred on a circular motif filled with spirals and swirling curves. Curved wing-like arms with chevron and linear patterns sweep out toward the shoulders and tail down the sides. The solid black linework and dense fill sit cleanly on the skin, with a red top and red tie at the neck framing the piece.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The net came up over the stern at first light, heavy as a wet sail, and in the middle of it was a manta the width of our kitchen table. My father swore and reached for the knife, but my uncle caught his wrist. Nobody on Ilha Tarra cut a manta. The old men said the spiral on its back was the same one the first fishermen carved into the prow of the boat, and that a ray killed in the nets took its pattern with it into the deep.

I knelt in the bilge with the twine bag and worked the mesh loose one knot at a time. The ray did not thrash. Its wings folded and lifted, slow as breathing, and the dark curves across its back caught the sun so that I could follow each swirl with my thumb while I picked. My hands smelled of tar for a week after. The net had been mended by my grandmother, who tied every knot with the same tight coil she used on her sewing, so the thread ran free and never snagged.

When the last strand came away, the ray tipped itself over the gunwale and was gone without a splash. My father said nothing. He took the knife back to the prow and, for the first time in my life, cut a second spiral beside the first, a little smaller, with a notch at its heart.

We did not speak of it at the market. But that winter the boat came home every time, and the net came up light, and the old men stopped spitting when they passed the prow.
