Tribal spiral tattoo down a back and side

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large tribal-patterned tattoo flows in an S-curve from the upper back down the side of the torso towards the hip. Bold solid black outlines frame pale spiral and hook shapes, while the gaps are filled with dense dotted shading and small cross and lattice motifs. The image is in black and grey ink, shown close-up on bare skin with a blurred indoor background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tide-reader's daughter had been told to stop asking why the sea turned, so she asked the gulls instead. They wheeled over the drowned car park at Old Harbour and screamed the same answer every morning: the current was tired, and a tired thing needs a hook to hold it.

Her mother had a bone needle and a pot of soot ink, and every spring she pricked a new line into the girl's back, following the great spiral the old maps called the Long Eddy. Each curl stood for a bay the sea had taken. Each small cross stitched into the gaps was a house whose name nobody could read any more. The needle hurt less than the questions did, her mother said, and it kept the tide off the boats.

The turn came the summer the eddy stopped turning. Wrack piled against the old lighthouse and the water lay flat as a dinner plate. Nobody dared put out a boat. The girl walked down to where the spiral met the rocks, pressed her palm against the wet black hook at the end of the spine, and felt it pull, slow and deliberate, like a hand pressing back.

She rowed out at dusk with her mother's needle in her pocket and a cup of soot. She drew one more curl on the water with an oar, and the sea, having been asked properly, began to move again. The fishing fleet came home the next morning, and the girl kept her spiral, every line of it, and never once asked the gulls anything again.
