Marine life sleeve on arm and side
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The photograph shows a large tattoo covering an upper arm and part of the side of the torso, with the skin partly in shadow at the edges. The design depicts marine forms such as sea anemones, coral and seaweed, drawn in fine outlines with soft, layered shading. The palette is muted and pastel, with yellows, pinks, pale greens and blues, and the image has a slightly soft focus.

At Halloway Junction, where the line climbed out of the hills and never saw the sea, the porters swept up weed every morning. It came off the 5.40 from Saltcombe, tangled in the wheel arches, and nobody could say where it started. Old Maud in the signal box said the sea had lost its way years back and was sending its things up the track to find it again.

The stationmaster, a patient man called Edwin Pryce, took the weed home and laid it in the waiting room in shallow dishes of brine. By spring the dishes held anemones, pale as cream and pink at the mouths, and coral grew up the iron legs of the benches in fine white branches. Travellers stepped round them and bought their tickets anyway.
One February the signal failed and the 5.40 did not come. Edwin walked down the line with a lamp and found the rails under a shallow tide, yellow sand in the ballast, and a bank of seaweed swaying where the cattle pens had been. He stood in the water until his boots filled, and then he heard the bell of a train that was not there.
In the morning the platform was dry and the dishes were empty. The benches were green with growth, and a new line had been chalked at the foot of the timetable board in a careful hand: Saltcombe, one way, no fare. Maud said the sea had settled its account, and after that nobody swept the weed from the wheels.
