Candy sweets pattern on an upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A dense sleeve-style tattoo covers a limb with peppermint swirls, red and pink hearts, gumdrops, jellybeans and lollipops, linked by looping ribbon-like lines. Bold dark outlines define the motifs, with soft shading that gives the sweets a rounded, glossy look. Bright reds, pinks, greens, blues and yellows fill the design against a dark background, and the pattern wraps around the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Cyril Dunmow had counted the gumdrops twice by half past eight, and by nine he had lost his place in the jellybeans for the third time. The shop on Tidewell Parade had opened at seven to a queue of nobody, which suited the Dunmows fine. Sweets did better when people had to wait for them.

The trouble started with the lollipop tree. It stood in the front window, a brass stand with forty-two lollipops fanned out like a bouquet, and every morning one of them went missing. Cyril blamed the gulls. His wife Edie blamed the lad from the chip shop, who had a face like a stolen apple and no visible means of earning a living.

On the fourth morning Cyril sat behind the counter with a ruler across his knees and waited. At ten past nine the bell rang, and the lad was nowhere in sight. Instead Edie came through the back with her apron full of peppermint swirls, the red-and-white ones from the 1952 moulds, and she slid them into the lollipop stand one by one as if she had every right to. A pink ribbon of sugar trailed from her pocket to the step.

Cyril said nothing for a long moment. Then he picked up one of the swirls from the tree, unwrapped it, and let it melt slowly against his cheek, the way Edie had taught him fifty years ago. "Hearts are better in the back," she said. He didn't tell her he had known all along.
