Masked figure with knife on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Two photographs show the same tattoo from slightly different angles. A masked figure in a dark jacket raises a large knife beside its head, with a lit house and a small silhouetted figure along the lower part of the design. Smooth shading and strong contrast build a realistic night scene in black and grey.

Her grandson Callum said it was nothing, only a bloke waiting for a lift. He said it the way young people said things they had stopped believing about four minutes earlier. He went round with the torch anyway, and when he came back he was holding a bread knife from her kitchen drawer, which he had apparently taken without thinking. He said the man had been standing on the wet grass with his back to the street, watching the house, and that there were no footprints in the grass at all.
They sat in the front room with the television muted and the curtains open a crack. At a quarter to three the lamp outside the post office went out. Neither of them moved to see where the man had gone. Dorothy held her cardigan closed at the throat and counted the seconds between the lorries on the main road, and somewhere past forty the front gate creaked, softly, the way it always did when someone was being patient.
