Grim reaper with scythe and hourglass on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A hooded grim reaper with a skull face grips a scythe in one hand and holds a chained hourglass in the other. Smooth shading and light highlights define the robe, bones and fabric folds, set against a soft grey smoky background. The photo shows two side-by-side views of the same arm.

Sit closer, and mind the fire, because this part is about sand and nobody likes to hear it twice. Now the miller's widow at Harrow Bend had a son named Teodor who could not stop bargaining. He bargained with the tax men, with the priests, with the tide. When the fever came up the river, he walked out to the crossroads with a jug of plum brandy and a deck of painted cards, sat down opposite the grey hood, and said, Let us play for the sand.
The Reaper, who had been playing cards since before Vell had a name, agreed. They played until the candle guttered. Teodor lost the first hand, and the second, and the third. On the fourth he won a single grain. One grain, no more, but it was enough to turn the glass a finger's width, and for a moment the sand in the upper bulb ran backwards like smoke pulled up a chimney.
Teodor went home to his mother. The fever did not take him that winter. Some say the Reaper simply grew bored of a player who cheated so badly. The old men of Vell say the glass still hangs at the crossroads, and that if you listen closely at dusk you can hear it ticking the wrong way.
