Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A line drawing of a woman's face and shoulders wearing a ram's head with curled horns, her hair flowing into swirling waves and scrolls. The last train at Fenmoor was never on time, but it always stopped, because of the woman on the platform. Folk said she had come up out of the cutting the winter the line was laid, with a ram's head resting on her shoulders and curled horns that caught the lamplight. Her hair ran down in long grey waves and spilled over the sleepers, and when the wind got in it, the scrolls sounded like wet rope pulled through a pulley.

Tom Ashdown, who kept the crossing gate, was the only one who spoke to her. He did not ask her name. He asked why she stood there every night holding rosebuds that never opened, and she said the rails had taken her husband and she was waiting for the engine that would bring back the thing he had owed her. Tom said he owed her nothing. She laughed, low, and said nobody ever did.
So Tom went home and cut the one rose his mother had planted by the gate before the railway came, the only bloom left after a hard October. He carried it down the platform in both hands. She took it without touching his fingers and turned it slowly, as if it were a letter she had been expecting for years. Then she stepped off the edge into the cutting, and her hair went after her like a tide going out.
The last train came through at twenty past eleven, on time for once, and nobody aboard saw a thing. In the morning Tom found a single rose open on the signal box sill, its petals edged in dark ink, and beside it a curl of grey hair tied with thread. He did not pick it up. He left the gate open for the first time in thirty years and let the railway have what it wanted.
