Woman with roses and a cat design

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A line drawing on paper of a woman with closed eyes, wearing a crown of two large roses and leaves, with long wavy hair that flows down the page. A cat with its eyes half closed sits beside her face, and the hair curls around both figures. The linework is fine and even, with soft grey shading on the face and rose petals, and the design is monochrome.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the cat, for she has never once let a story finish without walking across it. The bride in this tale was called Orla Penhallow, and she had two roses in her hair on the morning of her wedding, pinned there by her mother's hand because the florist had sent white ones and Orla would have none of it.

The groom was a cooper from Mevagissey who could not carry a tune and did not try. The cat was a grey thing named Mab who belonged to nobody, and who had decided that the wedding breakfast was hers. When the vicar reached the vows, Mab climbed the hem of the dress like a ladder and settled on the bride's shoulder as though she had been asked. Nobody dared lift her. The cooper said afterwards it was the only time he had ever seen his new wife go still.

So the vicar, who was wiser than his collar, simply waited. Orla turned her head very slowly, and the cat turned hers, and the two of them looked at each other for a long while with the same half-shut patience, the way a woman looks at a husband she has already decided to keep. Then Mab yawned, stepped down, and walked out through the open door into the lane. Orla said her I dos to the empty chair. Some say the cat was the true witness. The roses, I'm told, stayed in her hair until the next spring.
