Matching compass rose tattoos on two feet
Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two feet are shown side by side, each with an identical compass rose tattoo. The star points are outlined in black and shaded in grey, set within a circle of interlaced knotwork, with a black arrow crossing behind each design. Small script lettering sits beside each arrow, and the lighting is even against pale skin.

The forest started where Hob's Lane gave up being a lane, and everyone in Wendle knew not to go past the third stile after dark. My brother Tam never listened. He came home at dusk the autumn we were twelve with a compass rose inked across his palm, its points sharp as thorns and a loop of knotwork running round it like rope round a well.

"Where did you get that?" I asked, and he said the old woman at the mill had sold him a scrap of paper for a penny. It held nothing but a star inside a ring of knots, and a black arrow pointing north-west past the blasted oak. He followed it until the trees opened onto a clearing with no birdsong in it. He stood there long enough to hear our mother calling his name from the far side of the stile, and when he turned round the path had already closed behind him.
That night I copied his star into the back of my school atlas and drew the arrow the way he had described it, pointing back toward the mill. In the morning Tam was at the breakfast table, elbows on the cloth, eating bread too fast. He looked up at me with a face that was almost mine, pale and careful, and asked whether I still had the paper.
I didn't. I had only the arrow, and it pointed at the door he had just come through.
