Two matching feather tattoos with coloured beads and anklet-style bands on the ankles of two bare feet resting on a beige carpet.

Feather and beaded anklet tattoos on both feet

Ankle · Mixed · Photo

The image shows two bare feet on a textured carpet, each with a feather tattoo wrapped around the ankle with a beaded chain running alongside it. The feathers are shaded in soft grey and blue with fine dark outlines, while the small beads along the chain are picked out in pink, red and blue. The two tattoos are similar in design but not identical, and they are photographed from above with the feet angled toward the camera.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Jory, the gulls have been mad all week and Mrs Pask says it means weather, though she said the same thing about the mackerel. I'm sending the two strings you asked for, one with the grey feather and one with the pink and blue beads, though I've made them so alike nobody on the quay could tell which is yours. Don't laugh. I sat at the kitchen table with the lamp on until the sky over the harbour went from black to the colour of weak tea, stringing the beads one at a time while your mother snored through the wall.

The feathers came off the big grey gull that hit the window in March. I dried them flat under the Bible, which she will never forgive me for, then cut a small notch at each quill so the wire would hold. Each chain wants seven red beads, five pink and six blue, and I counted them twice because counting is the only prayer I'm any good at.

Here's the trouble. The second feather is a shade darker than the first, because the first was the better one and I got greedy and gave you that one twice. Keep the lighter one for yourself. When the boat comes in, tie the chain round whichever ankle you like, and if the tide takes you somewhere you can't see the harbour wall, look down and count the blue beads. There are six. You'll know you're nearly home.

Love, Aunt Ada
