The bosun makes us whip the end of every line before it goes over the side, a tight binding of twine so the strands cannot unlay. Forty-one days out of Hull, the Marguerite Vane is running a long grey swell south of the Azores, and my hands have learned the rope better than my head has learned to be homesick. Ada's letter is folded inside my oilskin, soft at the creases from being unfolded every watch.

She wrote in her small upright hand that the boatyard at Hessle had put her on nights, and that she spent her dinner breaks down by the slipway counting gulls. At the bottom, under her name, she had written the words I could not stop turning over: I will always hold onto you. She had pressed so hard the nib tore the paper. I wrote back from Gibraltar in pencil, the only thing aboard that would not smudge in the damp, and I underlined my reply twice.
The squall came up off the port bow just after four bells. Tomasz, the Gdańsk boy who sleeps two bunks from me, went over the rail on a wave of spray and caught the trailing line with one hand. I got a fist round his collar, then his wrist, and the rope burned through my palms as the ship rolled. The bosun shouted for the stopper. Nobody needed to tell me what I was holding, or that I was not going to let it go.
When the watch was done I took my pencil out and wrote one more line on the back of her letter, small enough to fit the margin: and I will never let you go. Tomasz has asked me twice since whether I was frightened. I told him the rope was frightened enough for both of us, and that a good knot does not need a man to be brave, only to hold on.
