The gulls had followed the boats in all week, and Nell Pardoe counted them from the net loft the way her father had counted lobster pots, one by one, with his lips moving. There were three birds that always came last, flying wide over the breakwater and back again, drawing the same loop over the bay until the water took the light.

Her brother Tam had gone out on the Morwenna on Tuesday with the ebb. By Thursday the other crews were in and the Morwenna was still a grey speck beyond the Stone Bank. The old women at the chandlery said the birds carried word between people who loved each other, and that as long as the loop stayed unbroken nobody on the water was lost. Nell did not believe them. She went on mending, needle through tarred twine, because her hands needed something to do.

On Friday, at the turn of the tide, the three birds came down low over the slipway. Nell ran out with her shawl flying and followed them along the harbour wall, past the boarded fish market and the lifeboat house, the way they went around and around. At the far end, where the wall bent back on itself, the Morwenna came round the point with her sail patched red and white and Tam standing at the tiller, one hand raised.

Nell took the chalk from her apron and wrote ALWAYS on the slate by the net loft door, big enough for the whole town to read. Then she went down to meet him, and the birds went on drawing their figure of eight over the bay, as they had done every evening since before anyone could remember.
