Infinity symbol with hearts and script lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
Two hand-drawn infinity symbols sit on paper, one above the other, each with a line of cursive script woven along the loop. The upper design has two small outlined hearts at the lower left, and the lower design has one heart at the lower left. The linework is uniform black marker on a cream background, with no shading or colour, and each design fills most of its half of the frame.

The marker in my hand had been Dad's, and it was dried out by the time I reached the second loop, so I went over the letters three times and called it character. Mum was at the kitchen table with her reading glasses on her head, pretending not to watch me. Every time I lifted the pen she said, mildly, that nobody was going to hold me to account for a wobbly f. I told her the wobbly f was the whole point.

I had drawn the first infinity twice already, on the back of a council parking letter, because I kept running out of room for the words. For my girls, I wrote, and then the curl of the sign took the sentence round the bend and out to the far side, where I had to squeeze I risk it all in tight. Mum laughed when she read it back. She said it sounded like a bus company slogan. Then she got up, took the other sheet from the drawer, and drew the second loop herself, neater than mine, with one small heart tucked in at the bottom curve like a stone in a stream.
We argued about whether the hearts should go on the left or the right. In the end I put the girls' heart in the lower corner where the line starts, because that is where the story starts too, and I let her have the second one because she had done the sums on the spacing. Because of her, the next line read. I didn't need to ask who her was. The pen ran dry on the last word, so I finished it in biro, and it looked, Mum said, exactly like the sort of thing you would keep in a drawer for thirty years and take out when someone needed reminding.
