Matching crown tattoos on wrists

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two small matching crown tattoos sit on the inside of each wrist, one on the left wrist and one on the right. The crowns are drawn in fine black outline with light grey shading, and the right-hand crown has a fleur-de-lis style detail at its centre. The photograph shows two people with their hands clasped together, with the tattoos as the focal point against soft, dim lighting.

The moons had already set over Carrow Fen when Ysolde came up the causeway with the salt still drying on her collar, and found her sister Brannagh kneeling in the sluice channel, a lamp clamped in her teeth and both hands buried to the wrist in black water. The gate had jammed again. Somewhere under the reeds the old pumps were groaning like a beast left out in frost.

Their mother had left them one crown between them, a thin silver band the village goldsmith had cut clean through the middle the year the floods first came, so that each daughter could carry a half. Ysolde's half had a worn fleur-de-lis pressed into the hinge. Brannagh had never forgiven her for being born first and getting the ornament. They had not spoken properly since the harvest, and the water had not waited for them to start.

Ysolde knelt beside her in the cold and took the lamp from her teeth. Neither of them said sorry. They simply set their wrists together over the iron bar, the way their mother had taught them to brace a plank, and pulled. The gate shuddered, groaned, and gave. Down the channel the water began to fall away from the reeds, and the pumps went quiet one by one.

Afterwards, the ferrymen of the drowned century say, the two halves of that crown would not stay apart on a cold night. They pressed together at the wrist whenever a sister reached for the other in the dark, and the marsh kept its side of the bargain. Ysolde kept her half polished. Brannagh kept the lamp lit.
