You'll want to hear about the ring. Tomasz, the steward's boy, lost his in the scullery drain on Tuesday and has been moping since, turning a bit of cord round his finger as if it might do the job. I offered him my spare, but he said the sea would only take it. So I took the blue chalk we use for marking flour sacks and drew a heart on the side of his finger, one thin line that never lifted once. It came out lopsided because the ship rolled halfway through, and he said it looked like a kidney bean. He has kept that hand in his pocket all afternoon anyway.

He says when we dock at Valparaiso he'll find a proper man with a proper needle and have it done in ink, so it can't wash off in the copper the way chalk does. I told him that was daft. He said he'd come back and show me once it healed, and I said I'd believe it when I saw it. Then I went back to the onions, and I'm still not sure which of us was blushing.
