Floral and mandala tattoos on both forearms and hands

Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A person sits with both hands resting on their knees, showing tattoos on both forearms, the backs of the hands and some fingers. The left arm has a pink and peach flower with green swirling linework and a lace-like pattern, while the right arm has black and grey roses, a sun-like motif and a dense mandala. The shading is soft and the composition is tightly framed on the arms and hands against a stone background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been falling on Saltergate market since the morning bells, and the lace-seller's awning sagged with it. Ida Marrow kept pushing the pooled water off the canvas with a broom handle, because her stall held the last good thread in the town and she would not have it ruined by a shower.

A stranger came under the awning just before noon, a man with green river weed woven into his coat and a sun-shaped brass button at his throat. He wanted a pattern. Not for a dress, he said, but for keeping: something that would hold the sun in a man when the clouds came down for a season. Ida laughed at him, then stopped laughing, because he set a single rose on the wet cloth between them, black as a bruise and grey at the petals, and it did not drip.

Ida's mother had taught her that a rose was never given for free. So she took her needle, threaded it with the palest peach silk she owned, and worked a lattice across the cloth that ran from the rose to the edge of the table, stitching a mandala where the rain could not reach. Every time the needle went in, a little of the sun came down out of the sky and settled into the pattern. By dusk the square was empty and the sun had gone from the sky, but it lay warm on the stranger's sleeve like bread fresh from the oven.

He paid her with a plain gold ring and left by the canal. In the morning the awning was dry for the first time in a month, and the rose lay folded in Ida's apron pocket, cool as a pressed leaf, waiting for someone else to ask for the sun.
