The thaw had come early to the water meadows, and Oda had to carry her sister across the ford on her back because Wen would not stop complaining about her feet. The stones were slick with green. Behind them the alders dripped, and somewhere up the hill a dog barked at nothing.

"Put me down on the far bank," Wen said into her neck, "and I'll walk like a grown deer."
"You'll walk like a wet sack," Oda said, and Wen laughed, which was the point. Their mother had said the river took one child each spring if you were careless, and Oda had decided long ago that she would not be careless with Wen. She stepped where the old path had been, the one with flat stones laid by hands nobody remembered. Halfway over her foot slid and she went down to one knee, and the cold came up through her skirt like a bite.
Wen did not scream. She leaned forward and pressed her forehead against the back of Oda's head, the way they slept in the winter hollow, two bodies folded into one warm shape. "Now we're both wet," Wen said softly.
They reached the bank with the sun coming through in pale bars. Oda set her sister down on the moss and sat beside her, shaking, and the two of them leaned together and watched the water go on without them.
