The guard at Kessel Bridge made me unpack the whole bag again this morning, and I stood there with my sleeves pushed up while he turned the jars of plum preserve over one by one, looking for something he had already decided was there. I thought of you and the fox, because you always said the fox would have got through with nothing but nerve. I am writing this on the back of the crossing form because the pen they lent me is chained to the desk.

Do you remember the summer we drew the animals on the back step with Father's carpenter's pencil? You wanted the fox to be the one who slipped under the wire, and I insisted the stag would stand at the fence and say nothing until the border man went home. We were nine and sure that one of us had to be the shield. Always was the word we wrote under both of them, because we had found it in a library book and thought it sounded like a promise a person could actually keep.

The officer has finally stamped me through, though he kept my papers under his lamp for longer than I liked. Outside the hut the lorries idle in a line that stretches back past the poplars, and a boy is selling hot chestnuts from a tin drum. I am going to buy two, one for each of us, and eat them on the bench where the road bends toward you.
