A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Below the lock at Stoke Vane, where the cut runs green between two orchards, the barge horses of the Lily Ann would not touch their oats. Their driver, a man called Harrow who had hauled coal on the Trent for thirty years, filled their nosebags each dawn and each dusk, and each dusk he found them standing at the hedge with their heads down, nipping the low leaves of the hawthorn and the sorrel along the bank.

"You'll founder on that," he told them. The grey mare, Tansy, lifted her head and looked at him with the patience of someone who has been asked the same question at every lock between here and Nottingham. Her companion, a dun gelding named Bramble, went on chewing. Harrow shrugged, and for a week the horses ate only what grew wild, and the boat slid up the water no slower than before. Perhaps a little faster. The men on the other barges began to watch.

In August the lock gates jammed and the Lily Ann sat stuck in the cut for three days with a hold full of rope and no feed cart coming. Harrow sat on the cabin roof, cursing and hungry, while the horses stood in the shade of the willows picking at grass and leaf as though it were a feast. On the third morning he found Bramble had stripped a hedge down to bare stems, and one green leaf lay pinned to the mud by a single drop of rain.

Harrow never asked the horses to eat oats again. When the gates finally swung open, he walked the towpath and shouted at the lock-keeper to come and see the barge move off the mud with only Tansy in the traces. Each spring after that, the Lily Ann went up the cut with her two grey mares, and under her name, painted in green on the board, was a single leaf that Harrow had cut out of the hawthorn and pressed flat against the wood.
