LOVE is the answer lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a person's inner forearm and wrist, with the face out of frame and a dark top visible. The tattoo is black text reading LOVE in bold capitals, with a thin horizontal rule beneath it and smaller capitals reading IS THE ANSWER below the line. The ink is crisp and solid on a soft, neutral background, and the lettering sits centred along the forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
You have been at sea nineteen weeks when the cook asks you the question for the third time this month, and you still have no answer that would fit on a slate. The Marigold Rose carries sixty tons of coal, two goats and a purser called Eustace Pim, who keeps his accounts in a green cloth book. Every Sunday the men queue at his cabin door to ask him sums they cannot work out for themselves, and he never charges them for it.

Pim writes each sum the way his father taught him, figures stacked above, a rule drawn with a steel edge, and the answer set beneath. You watch him do it for the boatswain's debts, the stoker's lost wages, the carpenter's daughter's name in Plymouth. One evening you ask him what the sum for you would look like. He taps the rule with his pen and says there is no sum for you, only the answer, and then he goes back to counting biscuits.
Off the Horn the sea turns grey as slate and the coal shifts in the hold. In the dark a deckhand called Tobias Wren goes over the rail after a hat that blew loose, and it is you who hauls the line hand over hand until your palms split. Afterwards Pim sits on an upturned crate with the green book open on his knees. He writes one word above a neat black rule, and under it, in smaller letters, the rest of it, and he does not tell you what it means. He simply closes the book and leaves the lamp burning.
